The Czech Republic Prepares to Introduce the European U-space Drone Management System – Key Technology by UpVision

The Czech Republic is joining the first European Union member states actively working to implement the unified European drone traffic management system known as U-space. Currently, preparations are being finalized for the integration of the Common Information Service (CIS) – the core intelligence of this system. The CIS supplier is the Czech technology company UpVision, part of CSG Aerospace.

Following the successful completion of initial milestones, the project has now entered the implementation phase. The full operational launch of the system is expected in the summer of 2026. However, it is important to emphasize that CIS alone does not represent the entire U-space. A fully functioning system will only emerge once CIS is interconnected with U-space Service Providers (USSP) that are certified by the Civil Aviation Authority (ÚCL). Only then can we speak of the complete deployment of U-space, which is anticipated no earlier than 2027. The Czech Republic thus stands among Europe’s leaders on this path, with the deployment of CIS being a key step toward achieving this goal.

The introduction of U-space in the Czech Republic is a major step toward the safe and efficient integration of drones into airspace. Thanks to the CIS technology provided by UpVision, a critical safety requirement will be met: the system will enable the sharing and coordination of essential information between drone operators, U-space service providers, and air traffic management. This means drones will become visible within U-space areas and will be able to use advanced U-space services to ensure the highest level of operational safety.

The CIS will serve as a central information hub, facilitating the exchange of data on flight zones, authorizations, aircraft identity, and other operational details. This will significantly enhance the safety, predictability, and smoothness of drone operations, including future operations within urban environments as U-space areas are established.

“We are proud that technology developed in the Czech Republic is helping to shape the future of European drone operations. The CIS we have designed and deliver is modular and fully compliant with European U-space standards,” said Štěpán Alexa, CEO of UpVision.

The implementation of U-space and its connection to CIS is part of the broader digitalization and automation of air traffic in Europe, supporting the development of innovative services such as delivery drones, infrastructure inspections, and security monitoring.

One area with particularly strong potential is medical delivery, where drones can ensure fast, efficient, and safe transport of blood, plasma, or vital medicines—saving valuable time often lost on ground transportation. Drones can also play a key role in infrastructure security, mass event monitoring, and the inspection of energy infrastructure. In the future, the greatest potential lies in drone delivery of goods, and eventually, passenger transport.

Two other companies from the CSG Aerospace division, the software firms CS Soft and Atrak, are closely collaborating on the CIS. Both have long specialized in the development of air traffic management systems and products. Their cooperation covers both software development and testing, including the use of AI agents, i.e., elements of artificial intelligence.
